The Quartet Meme
I’m not sure if I’m the Maryam that’s been tagged (there are a few of us out there), but if so here goes:
Four Jobs I’ve Had in My Life
1) Secretarial work for a Bankruptcy and Liquidation firm (baaaaaaad karma place, so I won’t put the URL up.)
2) Tech Support for an Internet Service Provider
3) Voice-over for educational computer programmes.
4) Research Assistant in an Islamic studies department
Four Movies I Could Watch Over and Over, and Have
1) When Harry Met Sally
2) Truly Madly Deeply
3) Star Wars (the original episodes 4,5 & 6)
4) Educating Rita
Four Places I Have Lived
1) Romsey (tiny, country town in Victoria where I lived on a farm until I was nearly nine.)
2) Far North Queensland (Tolga was my base, but I travelled around teaching and doing volunteer work)
3) Swindon, U.K. (round-about capital of England)
4) Sana’a, Yemen, where I left my heart. It’s the friendliest place in the world, and home to a masjid (mosque) that was built while the Prophet Muhammad
, peace and blessings be upon him, was alive!!
Four TV Shows I Love To Watch
1) How Clean is Your House (it makes me feel better about my own house)
2) Compass (a show on religion and spirituality)
3) Eastenders (Abu Yasmin and I watch it every night without fail, how tragic is that)
4) Dora the Explorer (because it is Yasmin’s absolutely favourite television show, and one of the few I will let her watch.)
Four Places I Have Been On Vacation
1) Israel & Palestine. (Been there twice: once on a nine-day Baha’i pilgrimage and again on my honeymoon.)
2) London (on my first big overseas trip and stayed with my Uncle who lives permanently in Pommyland.)
3) Houseboat holidays on the Murray River
4) Ireland (visiting my in-laws)
Four Websites I Visit Daily
1) Bloglines, an RSS reader that lets me catch-up on all my subscribed blogs, plus Sunni Sister who can’t seem to get the RSS feed to work
2) Gmail, boring but true.
3) Yahoo Groups, to read Ex-Baha’is because I have it on daily digest to stop my in-box being flooded, but recently I’ve been interested enough to see what the goss is.
4) Furl, because of needing something I’ve bookmarked but can’t remember what the URL is.
Four Favorite Foods
1) Khoreshte Badamjoon, oh divine, lovely Persian eggplant dish made from tender pieces of chicken or lamb, delicately flavoured with cinnamon, tumeric and dried lime, drooooooooooooool. Unfortunately Abu Yasmin does not like eggplant, lamb or any chicken other than breast (which is too dry for Khoreshte Badamjoon) so I rarely make it.
2) Any type of Biryani.
3) My mum’s lasagne: she makes the nicest, creamiest Bechemel sauce for her lasagne.
4) My friend Maher’s mum’s creamy chicken curry.
Four Places I Would Rather Be Right Now
1) Yemen
2) Yemen
3) Yemen
4) Yemen (did I mention I left my heart in Yemen?)
Four People Whom I Tag Next
1) Taubah from Soul Elixir (this will make her post bwaaahahahahah).
2) Shabana from Koonj, although she has her dissertation defense.
3) Karen from Karen’s Thoughts.
4) Katherine from JourneyWoman.

Salaam ‘Alaikum
Yes, I meant you, I don’t know why I didn’t use your kunya! That Persian dish sounds delish, I might have to try it… I’ve got the eggplant, after all. Hmmm. “Harry Met Sally” is one of my “over and over again” movies too. I didn’t know my RSS isn’t working… but I am using Sage, is that the same thing? B/c I think I read my blog once in Sage, when I was trying this newfangled thing out. :\

That’s okay. I registered ‘maryams.net’ way back when I wasn’t a Muslim because I really liked the name maryam and had it as part of an email address (I had been learning Arabic for a year or so). When I converted I was asked if I would like to change my name and I said ‘ahh..umm.. yeah okay… umm Maryam?’ But it never stuck because a) I never made anyone call me Maryam and b)I wasn’t really doing it for the sake of Allah
, only because I thought that was what Muslim converts did. Now I have the domain name and although I use Maryam online because I prefer to have some hijab on the internet, I don’t really respond to it as my name, you know what I mean? So I always get a bit confused when people call me that.
Given that the vast majority of the Companions did *not* change their name when they became Muslim (unless it had a derogatory, anti-Islamic or inappropriate meaning), there is no need for a convert to change their name today.
Having said that, I have a bit of a fantasy that when I do make baya’ to my Shaykh or Shaykha (whoever that person is), they will give me a new spiritual name, insha’Allah
.
The Persian dish is absolutely delicious. If you have a Persian restaurant anywhere near you, go and order it as it’s THE most divine food if you get the real deal.
The RSS feed isn’t being produced, are you using WordPress for publishing your blog? Sage is a reader, but there should be a setting in whatever you use to publish your blog, to also publish an RSS feed.
