Meming
February 21st, 2007Fave blog hasn’t tagged me, but I haven’t done a meme in ages, and this one caught my attention.
1. What is your main cell phone ring-tone?
Brring brring. I would be the type of person to have a polyphonic customised ring-tone, but I have an older Blackberry that only does mono and being a musician I can’t bear Greensleeves being murdered in the phone equivalent of a midi file in a Mp3 world, so brring brring is fine for me.
2. What is your default avatar?
I have two that I accidently set ages ago and now they just spring up in the strangest places. This is my favourite.
3. What station is your car radio permanently tuned to?
774 for Jon Faine in the morning. He’s the thinking woman’s sex-symbol.
4. What is your computer desktop image?
Over the last couple of weeks I performed the major surgery of uninstalling my perfectly customised Linux distribution (ohhh the pain) and reinstalling Windoze just because of ONE program that I can only get to work on M$. It just so happens it is absolutely necessary for my research and it is one of the 0.1% of programs that does not have a Linux equivalent. To cut a long story short, I used to have rotating desktop images with a variety of Islamic themes and graphics, but now I just have a slate grey colour (too depressed to attempt to customise Windoze).
5. Is there something you wear every single day
Undies. (Aka knickers aka panties).
6. I wish I had a tracking device on:
The plug converter that converts UK appliance plugs to fit into Australian wall sockets. I used to have three, but two have gone missing (who knows where) and Abu Yasmin keeps running off with the one I have left (and for which I need for half of my cooking appliances) just so he can recharge his trimmer or something.
7. What page does your internet browser open with?
Google.com.au - not very original, I know.
8. This item never leaves my car/purse:
The earplug to my Blackberry so that I can talk on the mobile legally while I drive. (Not that I get that many phone calls in the car.)
9. What TV show do you never miss?
It used to be EastEnders on cable, but these days I don’t make a habit to absolutely sit down for a particular show. There are quite a few that I will turn on if I get the chance, and the latest fave is Derren Brown who does NLP tricks (my uncle is well into NLP so I got all of the stuff from him before Derren came along) but it’s always amusing to watch.
10. What phrase do you hear yourself repeating too often?
With a three-year-old in the house, it’s whatever is her latest phrase. At the moment it’s a funny accent saying “not too baaaaad”. Like “how’s the weather?” “not too baaaaaad”.
Anyone can self-tag.

Salaam ‘Alaikum
Boo! I thought you were on sort of a blog break!! Yay!! I retro-tag you!
Salaam alaikum
Hi! I’ve been thinking of you (you might not remember me). Would you possibly send me your email so I can write you an email privately? To jog your memory, you very sweetly sent me a copy of Martin Lings’ Muhammad right after I converted. I’d like to just let you know what’s been happening in my life since then… Have been so sorry to hear of all your horrible illness and annoyances with the medical world. Nice to see you back blogging.
as-salaam alaikum,
With regards to (4), then there are things to try before going back to Windows XP. I know it probably comes too late, but you can install vmware and run an instance of windows XP (or 2000 or Vista or whatever) within Ubuntu. You can download it from http://www.vmware.com. I use that on my Ubuntu machine at home and have a number of different XP instances that I can fire up on demand depending on what I’m trying to do (one for work, one for uni, one for testing, etc) For sure you will be able to get the software you want to run using this method.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to bother with that, you can use wine to run the mentioned software. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine provides a simple example of how to use wine. Hope that helps.
Oh and just to add to the above: you can also use vmware to run an instance of Ubuntu inside XP.
Hmmm… CrossOver Office didn’t run Nvivo at all - and that’s based on Wine. I also tried with Win4Lin but it was just so slow it was a nightmare to use.
With VMWare, can you interract with a program you’re running within Windoze (i.e. copy and paste something from Notepad in the XP into Kate in Ubuntu? Or would you have to save the file and then reaccess it?
Assalaamu ‘alaykum dear Hannah,
So lovely to hear from you again!!!!
You can email me by taking the paragraph breaks out from the following lines:

I’d love to hear from you
Yes. You can cut and paste between the two environments. The vmware virtual machine can either run in full screen mode (so it looks like you are running a normal XP machine for all intents and purposes), window mode (so it is just like another app window on your desktop) or in a full screen mode that allows you to move in and out of the two environments with the mouse.
Here is a screenshot of Vmware running XP inside Ubuntu so you can get an idea of what it would be like. It’s certainly worth a try if you ever feel the need to return to Ubuntu.
I don’t own a cell phone, but if I did, I would want Sufi music as a ring tone
dafs and siter and ney would let me know the beloved is calling
Ya Haqq!
Irving: that sounds beautiful!
Amir: I looked at the VMWare - do you use the Server application?
Yes, I use VMWare Server. The player doesn’t allow you to create your own environments.
Also, if you don’t want to waste time configuring a custom build, you can go to http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/ and download pre-built VMWare images too and just drop them in your VMWare directory. For example, this one if you want to get Ubuntu up and running quickly.
