Wal & Suze in the SMH!

August 29th, 2007

Two of my bestest friends are in the SMH with a gorgeous piccy of them with their kids.  They really are a wonderful example of two Aussie Mossies.  (Isn’t Suze beautiful!! And I’m not just saying that because I know she reads my blog, but ‘coz she really is a halal hottie!)

Free SMS service to announce Ramadan - Australia

August 29th, 2007

Al-Ghazzali Centre is establishing a continuing free service for Muslim Australians, to be notified by SMS of the commencement of the month of Ramadhan (hence fasting), as well as for ‘Eid. To receive the SMS, register your mobile number at http://www.alghazzali.org/display/sms or go to our website at http://alghazzali.org.

The SMS notification will be sent to you after crescent sighting efforts on the 29th, and may be sent late that night after verification from Perth is received. The notification will inform you of the correct date to commence fasting, as well as ‘Eid ul-Fitr and ‘Eid ul Adha.

Al-Ghazzali Centre verifies that your personal details will not be sold or shared to any other party.

We Moved House

August 27th, 2007

Sorry for the seeming blog silence these past few days.  We moved house this past weekend, and Optus disconnected our internet two days early and I was stranded with nothing more than my Blackberry (oh the pain, quick plug me into the WWW again).

I like the new house - it’s a bit smaller than the other one, but cosier and has a nicer feel to it, alhamdulillah.  The move was bloomin’ hard work but relatively painless unlike last time when we got ripped off by a moving company.

I have the day off work today and I’m unpacking.  I actually don’t mind the unpacking process, it feeds the neat freak in me, to have everything put back in its right place.  I hate packing though.  Because you know you have all the hard work of the move ahead of you.

Test Your Associations

August 27th, 2007

Oprah (on free-to-air in Oz) had a show on the Implicit Associations Test. I’ve done the IAT test before, and I registered a slight preference for black people but a strong preference for young people (egads, I’m agist).

I took it again and managed to get a slight preference for multiculturalism (as opposed to uniculturalism) no real surprises there.  I am neutral on Judaism versus Other Religions (i.e. neither prefer nor not prefer Judaism as opposed to other religions, which doesn’t surprise me, as I’m generally interested in all religions and there were no ‘Muslim’ symbols to weight out the non-Jewish side, for which I would naturally have an affinity) but surprising to me, I show a strong preference for Arab Muslims as opposed to Other People.  I would have guessed ’slight’ preference based on my knowledge of Arabic and being a Muslim.  So, if you are *not* a member of the race you show a preference for, does that make you racist or not?
