Bye Bye Facebook
On hearing the news that Facebook owners sold out (partially anyway) to Micro$oft, I’ve decided to pull the plug on my membership. Sorry everyone, I’m not giving Micro$oft money, even indirectly.

okay, i’m obviously ignorant, but can you explain the main issues with microsoft? i know they’re a huuuuge multinational that buys out other businesses they see as a threat, so that crushes competition
and all that. and I know some ppl say things like windows are too expensive. but what else?
not to imply that that’s NOT serious, of course, but wondering if i am missing something.
i know that the gates foundation gives heaps of charity money, but i get the feeling that’s the
kind of thing more informed people scoff at. so -educate me, please!

Salamaroonies - I have to say I don’t know Bill Gates, and I have heard he gives an incredible amount to charity, masha’Allah
. The company though - sheesh. For me the defining anti-Microsoft moment, was the anti-piracy notification disguised as a critical update. Their business model is to treat ALL their customers as pirates and then weed out the ones they judge maybe aren’t pirates, just maybe.
Through their Digital Rights Management, through strong-arm legal tactics, through spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt), Microsoft wants 100% share of the consumer pie, and that is bad for everyone (except Microsoft). It is particularly bad for third-world computer users. Imagine a world that is locked in to Microsoft products, having to pay ongoing licenses and fees, and only being able to use Microsoft products. There is no way third world users could keep up, which could lock them out of what is becoming an essential part of modern society.
