“Mummy can we wish on shooting stars in Australia?”

“Weeeeeell yes,” oh my gawd, I think, this is so shirk, quick make it better before God strikes me down dead. “But you know, only Allah (SWT), subhana wa t’ala, has the power to grant wishes.”

Yasmin’s eyes brighten up. “Then, I wish I could be a fairy.”

Hmmm… not shirk, but not exactly correct etiquette for a du’a to the Creator of the Universe.

“Well, darling you can’t wish for anything that’s not real… or is bad.” I say remembering the list of things you’re not supposed to pray for. You know, things that would be harmful to others, or that can be achieved in ordinary methods (like getting yourself a cup of coffee) etc. I try to think of an example,

“Like, I couldn’t wish that our house is made of chocolate, because it would melt in the sun and then we would have no where to live.”

Yasmin doesn’t seem to think this would too problematic, but looks thoughtful for a few seconds and then pronounces,

“Then I wish for a pony.”

She has me. My four year old has outsmarted me. I laugh, and then add the caveat,

mebeli“But sometimes Allah (SWT), subhana wa t’ala, doesn’t say yes for quite a long time.
