Internet + freedom = democracy
May 17th, 2008Jack Fairweather from Islam’s Advance (Washington Post) has a post up on the use of internet technology (in this case Facebook) to encourage grass-roots activism in Egypt. Like Iran, Saudi and elsewhere, Egyptian authorities appear to be alarmed at the masses’ ability to use the internet and go ‘off message’.
For those of us who enjoy blogging and taking the proverbial out of our political leaders (*cough* ahem), we should not take our luxuries for granted. Perhaps a real marker of democracy in the world, is the extent to which the internet is un-censored and available to the plebs.

A Melburnian Muslim convert blogs religion, academia and life in general.
