Gender Discrimination

October 13th, 2004

I should point out, dear readers, that sexism in mosques (which I’ve blogged about previously) is not a new idea, nor is it a particularly hidden one. Mostly Muslims don’t see the sexism because they think it’s the way things should be. But more and more of us are not content to accept the status quo. I just happen to be interested in it, because it’s the topic of my thesis (well I had to pick one!)

For those interested in the topic, here’s a handy list of web resources:

    As Salaamu Alaikum,
Ramadan Mubarak! eww I cant stand sexism in the mosque. It’s so disguisting. I hate ging to a mosque where the men’s space is all big and nice, and the women’s space is all cramped up. like people don’t notice that crap. I wish I could build a mosque.
    salaam

    Women and Islam
Maryam of A Dervish’s Du`a’ has a Powerpoint presentation titled “Is Your Masjid Sister Friendly?” It is worth viewing as it has photographic evidence of the difference between the facilities for men and women in some mosques . …

What is the point you are trying to make sister? That men and women should pray side by side without a barrier in clear contradiction of the laws of Islamic etiquette? That men should perhaps pray behind a woman? How far are you willing to go?

The Shariah is not subservient to one’s whims and fancies. We follow what Allah (SWT) and his Messenger have taught; anything else is tantamount to disobedience maybe disbelief

Mosque is the Western term for masjid. The correct and proper term is masjid. The word mosque carries a horrible meaning in Arabic.

    Hi Bobby,

Actually the word mosque is simply a European version of the original masjid, similar to other Arabic words that have become part of the English language such as alcohol, algebra, Gibraltar, admiral etc.: there is no horrible meaning attached to it in Arabic.

The ‘jim’ in masjid is pronounced by some Arabs as ‘gim’ (a hard ‘g’ sound). Masgid was drawn into Spanish as mezquita which became anglicised as mosque.

I tend to use both interchangeably.
